Earlier this year, KUSI’s Allie Wagner stopped by our Oceanside location as part of a Good Morning San Diego segment supporting small businesses in San Diego County. During the segment, our founder, Felix Berry, and Allie discussed the mission of Felix’s BBQ With Soul, making it through the pandemic as a small business, the success of this restaurant, and serving quality BBQ in San Diego.
The Secrets to Great BBQ
Felix’s BBQ With Soul was started in Oceanside a little over 12 years ago and has grown into 3 more locations in Carlsbad, Lake Elsinore, and as of this year, San Marcos. It was started with a commitment to not only serving the best and most authentic Southern BBQ in San Diego but bringing Southern hospitality to the area as well. Providing our patrons with smiling service and quality food are our top priorities.
When asked what the secret is to great-tasting barbecue, Felix explained that it all comes from smoke. “Smoke, that’s what I was taught a long time ago. That’s where your flavor comes from. Your seasonings are your profiles – salt, pepper, paprika, different combinations of garlic, different oils. Everyone has a different take on what their flavors are… but barbecue itself, it just comes from the seasoning and the smoke. The sauce or the dips, those are just enhancers, really.”
Discussing the success of Felix’s BBQ and Soul, which is now four locations in Oceanside, Carlsbad, San Marcos, and Lake Elsinore, Felix explained his unique take on success and how it has also helped this small business make it through the pandemic. “Success is a funny story because “success” we often look at as bottom line, dollars. Success for us is our relationship to our clientele and the community, so in that, we have been very, very successful. There’s a lot of people who support us, especially through the pandemic, and we wouldn’t have made it without the support of our local community.”
